Photos: 3-year-old baby from Nigeria among 17 people dead/mising in the Mediterranean Sea- Italian Red Cross

Another tragedy struck in the Mediterranean Sea last night, October 13th. At least 17 people are considered to be dead/missing according to the 113 survivors rescued from a single rubber boat and now aboard the Phoenix, the Migrant Offshore Station (MOAS) vessel operating in partnership with the Italian Red Cross (CRI).

A 3-year-old baby from Nigeria is among those confirmed as missing. The mother, who is safe aboard the MOAS vessel, is still desperately asking for him.
“I was on the rubber boat with my son, he was crying and holding on to me. The sea was rough and the boat was taking on water. At one point some people started to panic. The next thing I knew I was pushed into the water and I lost my son in the chaos as I was trying to grab a life jacket. In a few days he would have been three years old"  the Nigerian woman recounted to the crew aboard the Phoenix while still in shock.
Among the other survivors is also a young man who recounts having boarded the migrant vessel with 5 friends, none of whom were found; while another man has told our crew that he saw a young girl of around 16 years drown before the rescue crews made it on the scene.
The Phoenix crew was alerted of the vessel in distress following a call received at 19:00 from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Rome last night. Still, it was only at21:20 that the rubber boat was sighted thanks to the Schiebel CAMCOPTER S-100 drones on board the Phoenix. In cooperation with the other search-and-rescue NGOs in the area, a rescue operation was swiftly launched.
Thanks to the great effort from the crews of Proactiva Open Arms, Jugend Rettet, the Boat Refugee Foundation and the joint MOAS-CRI mission, the rescue operation was swiftly carried out and all the survivors quickly transferred on board the Phoenix. Following the rescue operation, a search to recover bodies was launched, however this had to be interrupted due to persistent rough weather at sea. The number of those dead/missing cannot be confirmed.
According to survivors, they departed from Sabrata in Libya at around 14:00 yesterday afternoon. At the time of rescue, many people had already been in the water for several hours. Many people now on board the Phoenix are suffering from burns on various parts of their bodies, cause by the fuel leaked from the engine. Women in particular are among those suffering from burns since, unlike the men, they couldn’t take their clothes off and as a result their burns are more grievous.
One of the women on board is in a state of shock with 36% of her body covered in first degree burns. The immediate need to have her medically evacuated is currently hampered by the adverse weather conditions.
"The presence of various search-and-rescue operations in the Mediterranean Sea will not stop deaths at sea. As already declared several times, volunteer organisations cannot replace the institutions: we want a European response to end this shameful tragedy. It is not migration that is killing people, it is the indifference of governments and the international community at large", said the national president of the Italian Red Cross, Francesco Rocca.
"Our crews are tired of witnessing yet again people dying needlessly on what continues to be the most dangerous migrant route in the world. Amongst the 17 people thought to have died last night is a child who was not yet three, and whose mother’s shock and grief at the loss of her son is yet another stark reminder of the very real human cost of this journey", says Pete Sweetnam, director of MOAS.
Concurrently, as the Phoenix sails north, the second vessel run by MOAS in partnership with CRI – Responder – is on its way to Messina with 175 migrants on board who were rescued early in the week. They are expected to arrivetomorrow morning.

Zambia 1-2 Nigeria: Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho the heroes, as Super Eagles begin World Cup qualifiers in style

Zambia 1-2 Nigeria: Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho the heroes, as Super Eagles begin World Cup qualifiers in style

Goals from Arsenal starlet Alex Iwobi and Man City striker, Kelechi Iheanacho were enough for a Super Eagles side lacking so many key players like Odion Ighalo, Victor Moses etc, as they fought out a 2-1 win over Zambia in Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier on Sunday.

Nigeria led by Franco-German coach Gernot Rohr started with a line up of Ikeme Carl Onora, Elderson Echiejire, Kenneth Josiah Omeruo, William Troost Ekong, Brown Ideye, John Obi Mikel,
Moses Daddy Simon, Kelechi Iheanacho, Ogenyi Eddy Onazi, Alexander Chuka Iwobi and Onyinye Wilfred Ndidi while the Zambians led by Wedson Nyirenda comprised of Kennedy Mweene, Kabaso Chongo, Fackson Kapumbu, Adrian Chama, Stopilla Sunzu, Nathan Sinkala, Rainford Kalaba, Fwayo Tembo, Chisamba Lungu, Collins Mbesuma  and Winston Kalengo.
Moses started brightly for Nigeria on the right side as he tested the Zambian goalkeeper on the 5th minute then tried his luck with a set piece then at the 26th minute, beat his marker at the left flank before his effort was shot well over the bar.
Nigerians started pressurizing the Zambians then in the 33rd minute, Alex Iwobi volleyed into the net after bad defending from Zambia's defenders.
That goal wasn't enough for the Super Eagles as Kelechi Iheanacho combined well with Mikel Obi and Ideye before dribbling past goalkeeper Mweene then slotted into the net from a tight corner.
In the 48th minute, Zambia made their  first change of the game, replacing Chama with Mtonga.
Nigeria's defence started becoming shaky and the crowd started hyping the home team then in the 70th minute, a cross from Zambia's right wing that was poorly intercepted by Kenneth Omeruo was capitalized by Zambia's No 9 Collins Mbesuma who calmly slotted into the net.
Nigeria sat deep and defended the 1-2 scoreline till the end. Gernot Rohr's men will now return to Nigeria, happy to have gotten the maximum 3 points.
Congrats Super Eagles!

Man arrested with cocaine stuffed in his jacket at Lagos airport

31 year old Agwu Samuel pictured above, has been arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) after 10 wraps of cocaine weighing 110 grammes was discovered in his collar jacket at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos.

According to the Nation, he was arrested shortly after he disembarked from the aircraft on his way from Sao Paulo, Brazil. The suspect confidently wore the jacket containing the drugs but through experience and insight, the drugs were discovered by the anti-drug officers. This is the first discovery of cocaine inside the collar of a jacket by the NDLEA. Speaking on his arrest, ‎the NDLEA commander at the Lagos airport, Ahmadu Garba, said Agwu was arrested during routine check on passengers. “Ten wraps of cocaine weighing 110 grammes were found inside the collar of his jacket during screening of passengers on a South Africa Airline flight from Brazil through Johannesburg.

The drug which was carefully hidden inside his jacket tested positive for cocaine and investigation is ongoing.” When interrogated, the suspect who claims to be a shoe seller in Togo, said in his statement that he went to Brazil in search of greener pastures but resorted to drug trafficking due to frustration. He attended Technical Secondary School in Ohafia, Abia State. “I use to sell shoes in Togo until I lost goods worth N3 million.

This negatively affected my business and made me to travel to Brazil in a desperate search for greener pastures. After a fruitless search for job in Brazil for four months, I decided to smuggle drugs to get some money to start my shoe business. I thought the drugs will not be detected inside my jacket but I was caught and I am very sad”. He will soon be charged to court

Photo: 31-year-old mother arrested in Lagos for dumping her day-old baby by the roadside

The Ajangbadi Police Division of the Lagos State Command on Thursday, September 15th, arrested Ifunanya Eme for dumping her newborn baby by the road side around 3am on Tuesday, two hours after delivering the baby by herself. The 31-year-old single mother claimed she dumped the baby because she couldn't afford to feed her as the father had abandoned her when she became pregnant. It was gathered that a passerby alerted the police after hearing the pitiful cries of the baby. The police arrived the scene and took the baby to a nearby hospital for check up, before they initiated an investigation to discover the mother. Their first clue came when some neighbours alerted the Divisional Police Officer, Alim Musa, a Chief Superintendent of Police, about the pool of blood trickling out of a neighbour’s house. When the police got to the residence, the suspect was seen recuperating, while the baby was nowhere to be seen. The police questioned her once they confirmed from the neighbours that she was indeed pregnant. Ms Eme, who works as a sales person in a tricycles shop, admitted to the offence. The suspect, who was paraded at the police command headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos, said the fut she claimed she had just gotten the job and that the pay wasn’t much. "I gave up my daughter because I had no help and my mother is dead. I don’t even know the whereabouts of her father. The only thing I know is that he told me he was traveling. Since that day till now, the number he gave me can’t be reached."

MPBASE NEWS : FG to inject N350bn into the economy

Minister of Finance, KemiAdeosun, today disclosed plans by the Federal government to inject N350 billion into the economy. Speaking with reporters in Abuja today, Adeosun also disclosed that there are plans to also raise $1 billion from Euro-bonds by mid-December to ease the recession. According to Adeosun, the N350 billion being injected will be directed towards capital expenditure projects. “We are raising money. As you know the Euro-bond capital raise is on. We are about to appoint advisers so we we will be raising additional $1 billion. Two weeks ago we approved the external borrowing plan and that was very important,”she said The Minister said the Federal government plans to borrow N1.8 trillion from the African Development Bank, China, Japan and World Bank with rates of 1.25 per cent and a 20-year maturity. She added that the borrowed money will be used to fund an expected budget deficit of N2.2 trillion. “When we said we will borrow, we said we will borrow the cheapest money first. We have approvals in that plan from the World Bank, ADB, with interest rates as low as 1.5% and tenures as low as forty years to intervene in some specific areas which include agriculture, education, health, rebuilding of the northeast and of course the rail way project that are very key to what we are doing”she said
